Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "Doctor Syntax Entertaining at College." Offered in original colour. This print is one of a series of superb hand colored aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson, the satirist, which depicts the antics of Dr Syntax, a clerygyman who travels the countryside and gets up to all sorts of adventures, Rowlandson is perhaps the most famous satirical cartoonist in history and Dr Syntax is one of his most famous creations. DATE PRINTED: 1813, dated on the print.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 19 x 12.5 cm (7.5 x 4.75 inches) plus margins with a blank back (small). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and etched by Thomas Rowlandson. Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was an acclaimed British artist and caricaturist. Born and educated in London, he then studied drawing both at the Royal Academy and in Paris under Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. He gradually built up a reputation as a talented artist but a gambling addiction led to his impoverishment. To revive his fortune, and from advice from his friend, James Gillray, he became a caricaturist. Largely employed by the art publisher, Rudolph Ackermann, Rowlandson produced many fine drawings and etchings. PROVENANCE: Amongst Rowlandson's most well known works were the three 'Tours' of 'Dr. Syntax'. All written by William Combe, the first of these, The Tour of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, was published in 1812. This was an amusing but good natured parody of the famous countrywide tours made by the Reverend William Gilpin (1724-1804). The popularity and success of the first 'Tour' saw the publication of two additional tours: Dr Syntax in Search of Consolation' and Dr Syntax in Search of a Wife, published in 1820 and 1821 respectively.TYPE: Antique aquatint printed on paper. Aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique, a variant of etching that only produces areas of tone rather than lines. For this reason it has mostly been used in conjunction with etching, to give outlines. It has also been used historically to print in colour, both by printing with multiple plates in different colours, and by making monochrome prints that were then hand-coloured with watercolour. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
