Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire." DATE PRINTED: 1823, dated on the print. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 13 x 10.5 cm, 5.25 x 4.25 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by W.R. Smith from an original study by John Preston Neale. John Preston Neale (1780–1847) was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman. Much of his work was drawn, although he produced the occasional watercolour or oil painting. His drawings were used on a regular basis by engravers. PROVENANCE: Published in “Views Of The Seats Of Noblemen And Gentlemen, In England, Wales, Scotland, And Ireland." by Neale, J. P. Published in London. The first series commenced in 1818 and was followed by a second series in 1824. A final and more common re-issue occurred in 1829-1831 in which many of the earlier plates were re-touched. The images from the earlier series are sharper and more desirable. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Ramsbury Manor is a Grade I listed country house at Ramsbury, Wiltshire, on the River Kennet between Hungerford and Marlborough, in the south of England. The house dates from the 1680s, apart from an earlier stable building. It has two storeys and an attic, with nine bays at the front; to the south is a courtyard of cottages for servants. The gates are flanked by panelled ashlar columns, each bearing a lion supporting a shield. On each side is a square lodge, also in ashlar. Designed by Dr Robert Hooke, the house is considered one of the best examples of his work, being dignified and built to the highest standards of the time. Nikolaus Pevsner wrote that the house is a "perfect example of the moderate-sized brick mansion of about 1680, a parallel to Melton Constable or Felbrigg or Denham Place".
