Description: a fancy hardcover edition of the 1880 printing of "Our Village" by Mary Russell Mitford.i think this was the first printing of this particular format, and with these particular illustrations (by Murray and Boot), although Mary's writings about her village life had been collected in several previous publications under several titles, as far back as 1824, and as recently as this century, and illustrated by different artists, before and since this edition. so anyway, a beautiful, fully leatherbound, embossed hardcover, with the textblock gilt on all 3 sides.this is the 1800's equivalent of a coffee table book. just existing to provide fluffy, short reads, and look pretty.it is profusely illustrated, there's something on every other page, and the art is gorgeous.a cute read from an old woman recounting her happy, bucolic life growing up in her little town in England in the late 1700s.i flipped to several random pages so you can get a feel for the writing and the art. book is great if you're studying daily life in rural 1700s England, as it gives a lot of little snippets of info on how people lived and thought and what the general landscape was like at the time.its also just a cozy and enjoyable read for when you're dreaming of living that cottagecore lifestyle. CONDITION:unfortunately, there's serious water damage, including on back cover. see pics.besides this, there's some wear/rubbing to leather edges, and the first couple pages are detached but still present.some writing from previous owner, and a bookstore's price/info, written inside.the water damage is old, and it does not appear to have any mildew or smell outside of the usual "old book smell" (the grayish marks on insides of boards seems to be from the leather's dye).i oiled and waxed the leather a few years ago, it should be good for a couple more before you'll need to treat it again. SPECS: about 9.5 x 7.5 x 1.25".206 pages. check out my ebay store for more old and rare books from my personal collection.if this one interests you, "bird hospital" is another cute, cozy, nonfiction read.
