Description: I have here for sale a book entitled CHANGING CHINA by the Rev Lord William Gascoyne-Cecil, assisted by Lady Florence Cecil. It was published in 1910 by James Nisbet & Co Ltd. It has a b/w Railway Map of China, and 32 b/w photographic plates arranged over 16 pages. Rubricated title page. The author joined the China Emergency Committee, who invited the author to the Shanghai Centenary Conference. Afterwards he travelled in China, Korea and Japan. He visited the mission centres in China to find out about the country from its missionaries and also to pose the question of establishing a Western University. This is the third impression of this book.The book is divided into 3 main sections - China in Transition - foreign relations, good and bad points of Chinese civilisation, railways and rivers, opium, women, architecture; Religions of China and the Missionary - Confucius, Roman Catholic missions, Western literature in China, medical missions, movement in Korea and Manchuria and the future of Christianity in China; and The New and the Old Learning - education, government, difficulties in the way of education, the need for a university explained. There is an Appendix titled 'Will Russia be represented on the Mission Field?'Navy hardboards with gilt letering to the spine. Ex-library copy so library reference number to the spine and library sticker of Bishop Lyttleton Library, Winchester, to the front endpaper. No library stamps to the pages though. Some light foxing to the first few pages, all others clean. Binding firm.
