Whereas all other coins struck in the U.S. Mint have the devices set atop the fields, the Indian Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle were prepared so that the devices are impressed into the metal and, therefore, set below the fields. Proofs of this 20th century gold type were prepared every year from 1908 through 1915 in the Philadelphia Mint. The coins were delivered with either a matte or satin finish. Unfortunately, neither of these proofing methods struck a receptive chord among contemporary numismatists and many of the coins produced were melted as unsold. All issues in the proof Indian Five-Dollar series are, therefore, even rarer than even the limited original mintages would suggest.Store CategoriesStores HomeColonialsHalf CentsLarge CentsSmall CentsTwo-Cent PiecesThree-Cent SilversNickelsHalf DimesDimesTwenty-Cent PiecesQuarter DollarsHalf DollarsSeated DollarsTrade DollarsMorgan DollarsPeace DollarsOne Dollar GoldTwo Fifty GoldThree Dollar GoldFive Dollar GoldTen Dollar GoldTwenty Dollar GoldCommemorative GoldThree-Cent NickelsOther
