Description: FORTUNE MAGAZINE, March 1930, Vol 1 #2Fortune. April 1930, Vol 1, #2. This is the second issue of the magazine ever published - the first was in February 1930. Fortune was Henry Luce's second magazine (after Time) and catered to upscale business people, covering primarily business topics --important companies of the time period, wealthy and important business people. That's an interesting strategy, when you consider the time period was the Depression. The magazine is stunningly elegant, with many full page advertisements in the Art Deco style of the time, many in color. In fact, the magazine used a lot of color throughout. The ads are also upscale, featuring fancy automobiles, private planes, yachts, expensive liquor, hotels and travel, plus there are many advertisements for large iconic businesses. This issue features articles on US railroads (with several color maps); South Bend Indiana and its industry (Studebaker, Bendix, Singer Sewing Machine, etc); Wall Street (with an interesting map of the area); the thirty largest fortunes in the world and the people who held them; a lengthy article on the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa); The House of Mitsui and its empire; the partnership of Kuhn and Loeb, faces of the month (important people) and precious stones. Most all are illustrated. Especially interesting is an article on bullfighting by Ernest Hemingway (with color illustrations). The issue also contains photographic illustrations by Margaret Bourke-White and other prominent photographers. There is a fabulous color advertisement for the Marmon Motor Car at the front. The magazine is in very good condition, solidly bound, but has several small stamps and a couple small cross-outs on the front cover. At one time it was in the collection of Seattle Public Library, but there are no other library markings and it is in especially nice condition otherwise. 11x14 inches, softcover wraps, About 125 pages.
