Description: 1930s Elegant CHINESE NEW YEAR’S card – from SULTAN of KELANTAN, MALAYSIA? Elegantly designed and printed Chinese New Year’s card, with message in Chinese and English: Wishing You a Happy and Prosperous New Year. 3.5 x 7.5”. The multi-color and gilt decoration on the front is embossed and printed on silk-like paper. Written in ink: Muhammad KELANTAN – possibly MUHAMMAD III (1900-1920) or MUHAMMAD IV (1920-1943), SULTAN of the Malaysian state of Kelantan. Kelantan is an isolated rural province in the northeast of peninsular Malaysia, bordered to the north by a province of Thailand. It has been ruled by an Islamic Sultan for over 600 years. Chinese are a significant minority ethnic group in Kelatan, thought they comprise only 3% of the population and almost all are Buddhist rather than Muslim. If this was indeed sent by the Sultan – the elegant production certainly indicates wealth if not royalty – I can’t explain why the “royal” signature was not more formal.
