Project Kells: Inspired by the Book of Kells and its mesmerizing patterns women amongst the vellum pages, Project Kells evolved. Standing atop the Hill of Tara and contemplating the conjoined ringforts of Forradh and Teach Chormac, the games of Sacred Hill and High Kings of Tara were born. Steeped in the ancient legends of Ireland’s Celtic heritage and royal past, these unique games of pure strategy are appreciated by young and old alike. Easy to learn, yet a lifetime to master, this is truly a gift to treasure. There are eight variants to stimulate the mind, so take it to our own level. Sacred Hill: This first game introduces the basic elements of play. The aim of both games is the same: to have the least number of kingdoms by the time the game is ended (a kingdom being a group of linked ringforts). There are two phases to the game. In Maneuvers (first phase) you are building a network of unconnected ringforts scattered around the board. In Battle (second phase) you are adding ringforts next to oyur own, linking them together with bridge tiles, to form larger (and fewer) kingdoms. This starts to magically create the Celtic knotwork. Isolated ringforts that are besieged must be captured. High Kings of Tara: The second game introduces the kings. Each player has three which do the work of building your ringforts. They move like the knight in chess and add many more twists and turns to the game, taking it to another dimension. Kings can capture enemy ringforts and kings; they can also be immobilized. Your own kings cannot work in tandem, and they must always move to a vacant hill whenever possible. You’ll be amazed at the possibilities. Once you’ve learnt the basics, be prepared to delve deeper. Scoring with knots (instead of kingdoms) will get you addicted. Rachel Arbuckle: Dublin born artist Rachel Arbuckle graduated from Dublin’s National College of Art and Design in 1990. She has always been fascinated by our Celtic heritage. Inspiration found in the intricate knotwork adorning the ancient manuscripts, stone and metalwork, coupled with Rachel’s love of a good story, have combined to produce some of the most popular images in contemporary Irish Celtic art. Her colours, although modern, emulate the softness of the natural pigments used by the Celts and a discerning eye will recognize shades of both Tuscany, where Rachel currently lives, and the Beara Peninsula, where she thrives on the rugged West Coast of Ireland. Today her work is available worldwide, bringing a taste of Ireland to the four corners of the earth. Murray Heasman: Murray started inventing and developing games at the age of 13 when he was heavily into Airfix models. He used to play a classical lute-back mandolin and bought an electric mandolin. When he couldn’t find a short guitar strap, he carved his own with single knots crossing 712 times. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin loved Murray’s straps and ordered some with Celtic knotwork. Weeks later, Murray decided to design a game cutting up pieces of cardboard, which developed into High Kings of Tara. It took 12 years and countless iterations before it was ready. It needed to be beautiful and Murray visited the Hill of Tara to soak in the history and atmosphere. The two conjoined ringforts were the turning point in the development. And from there the Sacred Hill game evolved. This game set has both games and 8 variants for endless hours of fun! Bob Naismith: Bob went to art school and studied silver smithing and graphic design and started out sculpting for Wargame Publications in Glasgow before joining Navwar Productions Ltd. In the early eighties (1983/84) he joined Citadel Miniatures, where he sculpted the first Space Marine, leaving 6/7 years later to become a freelance sculptor. One of his first freelance jobs was a collaboration with Grenadier Models, and he is the sculptor for Project Kell’s Sacred Hill and High Kings of Tara games.
