Completed in 1825, the 363-mile long, man-made waterway connected Lake Erie in the West to the Hudson River in the East. Considered an engineering marvel of its day, the canal unlocked the western interior for trade and settlement and played a critical role in the development of the State as well as the Nation. The reverse (tails) design depicts a packet boat being pulled from a city in the East toward the country areas to the West. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES of AMERICA” and “NEW YORK.” The obverse design features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” The obverse also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. The edge-incused inscriptions are “2021,” the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
