This is a perennial pond plant has a hairy erect stem with few or no branches and can grow up to 4 feet tall. Leaves are on short petiole, lace to heart-shaped 2 to 5 inches long by 1 to 3 inches wide . The floral spikes are about 4-7" long and semi-cylindrical in shape from dense whorls of flowers; they often nod at their tips. The blooming period occurs during the summer and lasts about 1 month or slightly longer. Cultivation: The preference is light shade to partial sun and wet mucky soil to shallow water. The foliage is rarely bothered by disease or insect pests. Too much sunlight will cause the leaves to turn yellowish green.Medicinal use : Sedative. An infusion of the roots has been used as a wash in the treatment of rheumatism. The root is roasted then mashed and made into a poultice to treat sore breasts. A boiled extract of the roots is used as a poultice to heal flesh wounds. The dried leaves can be made into a tea and drunk for the treatment of back and breast pains, it is also used in treating stomach ailments.
