THOMAS From the Small Passion (‘die Kleine Passion’)Edition: Fourth and final published edition from original Durer blocks, 1844Dimensions: Image Size 5 x 3 3/4 inches, Matted dimensions circa 14 x 11 inches THE FOURTH EDITION:Two published editions of ‘Small Passion’ (‘die Kleine Passion’) were printed by Albrecht Durer in Germany between 1509 and 1511; a third edition was printed a century later in 1612 in Venice by Mauritio.Moro, and finally in1844, the fourth and final edition published, was printed using the original woodblocks. The fourth edition was made in 1844 from metal plates made from plaster casts of thirty-five of Durer's original woodblocks, after they were given to the British Museum in 1839. This woodcut is from that edition. N.B. The original Durer blocks of The Small Passion are under lock and key in the British Museum and have never been used since 1844, therefore all later copies are NOT from the original blocks.
