Condition: A goodish acceptable copy with some marks, scuffs and wear. Missing fep. Ink stamps to front pastedown. Light foxing early and late on. Hinges cracked. Puncture holes in rear board. Binding pretty sturdy, interior generally clean. The photographs are the most reliable guide to condition. Context: A collection of fifteen tales of the weird and supernatural. I could never bring myself to read this collection after being grievously cheated out of a lovely copy in dustwrapper. I had travelled over to Chippenham to meet a new bookdealer acquaintance at his home - spent a few hours talking books, drinking tea, meeting his family - then headed over to Dominic Winter's auction house with him for a viewing. I spotted a copy of this book in dustwrapper in a job lot of circa 40-50 otherwise boring books and decided to leave a bid. My new book dealer friend said not to bother with that, he'd stay and bid for me because there were other things he wanted for himself anyway. I could settle up with him afterwards; it would save me the trouble of having to leave a bid etc etc. Anyway, he then bought the shelf of books for me, but when I tried to arrange squaring up with him & collecting the books, he suddenly became very ruthless. "I've spoken to my old friend George Locke who told me that this Blackwood book here is very rare in dustwrapper. He said it's worth at least 500, so if you want it, it'll cost you 500 on top of what the shelf lot cost." "But you offered to buy the books for me at cost and pass them on as a friendly favour," I replied. "It was a gentleman's agreement!" The dealer chuckled darkly. "There's no such thing. There's just a book you want that I have, and it's going to cost you 500 to get it. Take it or leave it." Needless to say, I left it and had no further dealings with said cut-throat dealer ever again (nor indeed with his friend to whom he passed it on to). Anyway, that very long unsalesmanlike ramble is why I have not read this book so cannot advise on the stories therein. However, they ARE supernatural stories.
