Description: Preface by Dr. W. M. Whitehill, Director and Librarian of the Boston Athenaeum. The diary of 24 year old Henry Yates Thompson describing the social and political scene during the civil war. He talked to everyone he met; politicians, wounded soldiers on the battlefield, generals, hotel keepers, slaves, academics and farmers. He visited the slave farms of Eastern Maryland and stood next to General Grant during the Battle of Chattanooga. The diary is extensively illustrated with mementos, sketches and contemporary photographs. The editor is the authors great-nephew and inherited the diary from him. Fully illustrated with 5 more black and white plates, 50 more illustrations and 2 maps including a fold out 1863 map. I am a new seller on eBay. I am not a dealer.
