Description: Please email with any questions. 3 page hand written letter on 8" by 9 1/2" pale blue paper. Sent to hardware merchants in Macon, Georgia by D J Bothwell, Gum Creek, Dooly County. In the 1850 Dooly County census I found a man named David J Bothwell, age 38, physician. Mr Bothwell is replying to the Macon business's letter regarding a counterfeit $50 bill that Bothwell claims that he received from a go-between for the company when he settled his bill. Bothwell is adamant about the fact that he received the counterfeit from them but feels that the Macon firm's letter to him had the tone of passing guilt on to him. Handwriting is fairly legible and it is obvious that the writer has been educated. In the 1850 Dooly County census I found a man named David J Bothwell, age 38, physician. Dr. David John Bothwell was member of Convention 1850 from Dooly Co, Ga., Senator for 14th Distr. 1861-63. He lived in Dooly Co, on what is now called Powell-Clegg. Later moved to Augusta and was in business with his brothers James and Samuel. In the 1860 census, I found D J Bothwell as a farmer. I am fairly sure it is the same man, as the age, names of wife and children matches up.
