Description: Solid Wood 19c Lidded Box with Handles Why would Victorians have a Large Wood box of this size with handles? The inside is not scuffed up, like it probably held paper , maps, music? or gloves or ? it has the look and smell of antique wood. Look at the bottom.. see video... The bottom is worn and has the look of a box that may have been used like a campaign chest or other traveling item that may have lived in a tent or covered wagon or environment with a moist exposure. Was it some kind of travel accessory? Was It called a Military Campaign Chest for Maps or Papers or ?27" long x 10.5" h x 10.5" wide wt 16.8 lbs unpacked The Item has marks on the wood (see pic of right back) that makes me think it may have had a different hinge back at some earllier period and someone added a piano type hinge later. (See pics) There are pegged joining pins on the corner like in very old construction. Some of the old screws look ancient (hand made centers). This is a pretty and well constructed box. It is heavy and looks like parts are veneered wood but the lid and carved front may be a solid plank. I am not a wood expert, this is just what I see , I cannot tell you the type of wood or exact age. This makes a lovely box for the hall table to catch keys, purse, small collapsing umbrella, hat, gloves etc. or use it in the media room for TV remotes and game controllers, or a jewelry box, or ???.
