Antique handmade Bogolan strip-woven mud cloth from Mali, West Africa B211

Description: Mid century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent scarf, shawl or throw. Old mud cloth textiles are extremely rare and almost impossible to find; virtually all pieces currently on the market are new.The textile is handwoven in 5" (13cm) wide strips which are hand and machine sewn together to form one large cloth and design is quite minimalist and modern. It is in elegant shades of tan and natural cream colored cotton and it a highly unusual design. The textile is 32" (81cm) wide x 68" (172cm) long with a small hem at one end and a raw edge at the other [see photos]. There are no holes or stains that I can see. There is some wear roughly in the center of the textile [see photos] and a 6 1/2 length of wear to one edge. The textile has been woven from raw, unprocessed cotton with a very crisp hand feel. It is in good condition given its age and origins.I recommend hand washing seperately with cold water and mild soap. This piece has already been washed and can be used immediately.
