Description: It is hard to escape the legacy of the Punch Magazine. From 1841 to 2002, the magazine cast a satirical eye on life in Britain. It charted the interests, concerns and frustrations of the country and today it stands as an invaluable resource not just as cartoon art and satire, but as primary source material for social historians. This illustration by Bernard Partridge, from PUNCH Magazine, March 12, 1919. Original, pulled from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. THE FOCH-TERRIER: "I know all about that silly dog in Aesop. I'm not going to take any changes (Dog is RF, Republic of France)Marshal Ferdinand Jean Marie Foch (2 October 1851 – 20 March 1929) was a French general and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War. On 11 November 1918, Foch accepted the German request for an armistice. Foch advocated peace terms that would make Germany unable to pose a threat to France ever again. He considered the Treaty of Versailles too lenient on Germany and as the Treaty was being signed on 28 June 1919, he declared: "This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years". His words proved prophetic: the Second World War started twenty years and 65 days later.Full size: 8 x 10 1/2 inches, including borders. Pictured image is slightly cropped.
