By comparing ground squirrel and human iPSC-derived neurons, they identify mitochondrial and lysosomal pathways as being critical for microtubule stability in the cold. Manipulating these pathways conferred cold endurance in human iPSC-neurons and preserved the structure and function of the rat retinas after cold exposure. The same treatments also improved the preservation of cold-stored mouse kidneys, demonstrating the potential for prolonging the shelf-life of organ transplants.
