The map depicts also Japan and Corea shown as an island, with the northern part of Philippines.Several large lakes dominate the topography of this elegantly engraved map of China. The Great Wall forms the northern boundary of China. The fictitious Chiamay Lacus is shown with numerous rivers flowing south into India and Siam. Korea is depicted as a strangely shaped island separated from the mainland by a narrow strait. Taiwan is located in a roughly correct position, named as both Pakan al I. Formosaand Tayoan The three main islands of Japan are shown on the Ortelius/Teixeira model. A fine title cartouche is flanked by a Chinese woman and man. The map is further adorned with a coat of arms (dedicated to Theodore Bas, a director of the Dutch East India Company), European ships and Chinese sampans. Condition : good condition, old colors. Willem Blaeu was the founder of the Blaeu cartography dynasty, the finest mapmakers of the Golden age of Dutch cartography. He studied astronomy with Tycho Brahe at Uranienborg, and moved to Amsterdam to establish a shop in 1605, close his contemporaries and rivals Johannes Janssonius and Jacob Colom. He produced globes at first. Then, the sons of Willem, Johan and Joan, joined him in the firm. They produced their first atlas together in 1630 the "Atlas Appendix". Five years later, their produced their "Atlas Novus", edited in 4 languages. After the death of Willem, Joan expanded the Atlas Novus into the Atlas Major, the largest atlas of its time. This edition had between nine and twelve volumes, beautifully engraved and coloured. In 1648, they produced a very large wall world map in 20 parts. And they continued to produce globes too.
