Con Cor HO Scale EMD SD35 Southern Pacific Locomotive

Description: I. History: a. General Electric Electro Motive Division (EMD) SD45:The SD45 is a reliable, heavy-duty locomotive that has been utilized by many different North American railroads at one time or another since its 1965 introduction to the railroading scene. Noteworthy as the first diesel locomotive with an engine of more than 16 cylinders, EMD would eventually build 1260 of these 3600-horsepower road switcher units in less than six years. More than twenty-five railroads bought these units new, and several more purchased them second-hand. Some of these users applied more than one paint scheme to the sides of the SD45 as well. A distinguishing mark of the SD45 is the flared radiator along the top edge of the long hood's midsection. b. The Southern Pacific (reporting mark SP): The SP is a fallen flag Class one railroad that operated from 1865 to 1996 on the West Coast. By 1996, years of financial problems had dropped Southern Pacific's mileage to 13,715 miles. The financial problems caused the Southern Pacific Transportation Company to be taken over by the Union Pacific Railroad. The Southern Pacific legacy founded hospitals in San Francisco, Tucson, and Houston. In the 1970s, it also founded a telecommunications network with a state-of-the-art microwave and fiber optic backbone. This telecommunications network became part of Sprint, a company whose name came from the acronym for Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Networking Telephone. c. Con Cor Manufacturers: Jim Conway started in the model train business in 1959 buying die-cast freight car kits from Clarence Menteer at Model Die Casting, painting and assembling them in the basement of the family home, and selling the RTR cars through a local Hobby Shop. (Jim was a high school junior at thistime.) In 1961 Jim joined with some members of the local model railroad club and opened a Hobby Shop on the NW side of Chicago named “Trains,Inc.” In 1962 Jim started making wood/ metal “craftsman” style kits to compete with the likes of Main Line Models, and Ambroid which the local hobby shop could never get enough of, so he figured there must be a market there. First model was a 1918 USRA wood Boxcar kit. In late 1962 Jim had made a contact in Japan through Ken Kidder who was importing some HO Brass models to buy parts for his kits, (screws, wheelsets, etc) Through that contact, Jim with some of the partners in the Trains,Inc Hobby shop, including Harry Hageman who most of the Industry old timers would remember as well, started to import some “HO” brass models under the name of “Trains, Inc” Con Cor was the 2nd Model Railroad company to bring American “N” Scale to the USA, delivering the N PA-1 only a few weeks after Atlas delivered their “N” E-8 models. Jim has been around the model train business for over 60 years, as a domestic manufacturer, as well as an Importer. He was inducted into the Model Railroad Industry Hall of Fame in 2009. And is currently headquartered out of Phoenix Arizona. All Con Cor items are designed for the adult modeler (14+ years old). Their items are highly detailed even more so in todays market. Prior to the pandemic Con Cor products were manufactured at the AffaTech model train factory in China. II. The locomotive’s mechanism rests in the center of the die-cast metal frame with a Powerful five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels for smooth stopping. Some assembly required c. Model Finish: Lark Gray Red "winged" nose referred to by SP Enthusiast as the "Bloody Nose" Scheme. d. Important note:This item has been in storage for over 10 years. It is recommended for longer running time and better performance to inspect, and clean out the gear case of all old grease, particularly if the grease has caked (hard, and dry) use Isopropyl alcohol and toothbrush. And lubing w/ Labelle 106 usually does the trick, Other bushing/ bearing points should be oiled w/ plastic compatible lubricant (motor shaft, worm bearing as well as any axle and other pivot points. A thorough wheel cleaning is in order use isopropyl Alcohol and Q-tip cotton swabs should make wheels look new. I see little wheel wear, but tarnishing due to storage. Maintenance instruction included. III. DCC conversion Info: Analogue DC only, DCC conversion not recommended except by professional companies that do such work. Expensive and not worth the money. More than likely you can buy a new Con Cor (or comparable brand) SD 35 with DCC, sound, and LED Ditch lights for less money than paying for a DCC conversion. IV. Box: Original minor shelf wear. V. Shipping: Free local pick-up Seattle WA area. Domestic: Free USPS Priority Mail. International shipping: Through eBay global shipping program only.
