Mary Mapes Doge, who lived from 1831-1905, was born in New York City, the daughter of a promoter of scientific farming. Homeschooled, Mary studied Latin, French, drawing, and music. She married Wiliam Dodge, an attorney. "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates, is set in the Netherlands---a country she never visited. Written in the 1860s, the story was a "good-night story" for her boys, making it up as she went along. Dodge began weaving in the history of the Netherlands and she became absorbed in the story. She submitted every chapter to accomplished Dutchmen living near her. A golden watch and one thousand lost guilders---appear early in the book to tantalize us with their meanings. We meet the Brinker family---fifteen-year-old Hans, a "solid hearty-looking boy, with honest eyes"; twelve-year-old Gretel, "lithe and quick," whose eyes have a "dancing light in them," and Dame Brinker, who holds the household together and the father, Raff Brinker, who ten years earlier had fallen from scaffolding and who remains an incoherent, sometimes violent, madman. Desperately poor the family struggles to make ends meet. Dame Brinker is tempted to sell the gold watch. But Dr. Boekmann, a great doctor, finds his own humanity in helping Raff. Dodge describes the richness of sights, sounds, and smells of nineteenth-century Holland. The tale of Hans and Gretel became an instant success and was translated into German, Dutch, Russian, and Italian. The book was awarded the Montyon Prize. 345 pages---a RARE title.
