Description: ECCE HOMO 100 drawings including 16 illustrations in full color by George Grosz - Dover Publications NY, 1976 George Grosz (1893-1959) was a controversial German artist known for his caricatures of capitalists, prostitutes, the Prussian military elite, and the middle class. His works of the 1920s were influenced by the complicated political and economical situation in the Weimar Republic and the rest of Europe, and he was often in trouble with the law for offenses against public morality, insulting the army and blasphemy. He moved to the United States in 1933 as his work was classified as Entartete Kunst or “Degenerate Art” by the Nazi German government of Adolf Hitler. After he settled in America he changed the style and subject matter of his earlier work and taught for many years at the Arts Students League in New York and opened a private art school as well. The book we offer here is part of a larger collection of German and English language art publication related to George Grosz purchased from the estate of a wealthy New York collector by the gentleman that we subsequently purchased them from many years ago. This is a very nice 1976 example of ECCE HOMO 100 drawings including 16 illustrations in full color by George Grosz, published by Dover Publications NY, ISBN 0-486-23410-x. In 1924 Grosz was prosecuted for offenses against public morality as a result of ECCE HOMO and the album was confiscated as being pornographic. This 8-½ x 11-¼, 84 page laminated softcover was printed in the USA and is in very nice little-used condition, tight spine, no offensive odor. Photo of actual book shown above (not a stock image).
