From the booklet: CHAPTER I THE FIRST LADY OF SONG As in Louis, Frank, Elvis and very, very few others, the first name suffices. No one's going to ask: "Ella who?" Nor would anyone take issue with the following claim: "Ella Fitzgerald has been called the greatest and The First Lady of Song and almost every other superlative for so long now that it begins to become one of those accepted bromides like 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away,' etc." What makes this passage really quotable is that it was written 45 years ago by the late Bob Bach in the late Metronome, then a leading music magazine. She remains the First Lady of Song- a title that should be retired with her when the time comes. This compact disc birthday bouquet covers the period from 1938, the year of Ella's first big hit, to 1955, when her 20-year . . .
