Description: The Knife This knife is a brand new, genuine Russell Green River Hunter in 1095 high carbon steel. The real thing. I bought the blank and affixed a handle in 316 stainless steel pins and super tough, super durable red linen Micarta. These Green River knives helped settle the North American continent for two hundred years and are still in use today. There's a reason for that. The high carbon steel is easy to sharpen and easy to keep sharp and is tough and ready for work. They were sold inexpensively by the barrell full and filled the hands of butchers, hunters, farmers, settlers, wanderers, mountain men, housewives from one end of the continent to the other. Over thirty years ago, I found them an inexpensive and much more interesting and fun alternative to the typical knives you see in sporting good stores. It's the only hunting, fishing and survival knife I have ever needed... beside my 15" Bowie. ;-) What I do to these knives is buy them as blanks, patina the blade in vinegar, affix and finish the handle, strop the blade and strike it with some 0000 steel wool. This particular knife has some intense patina and looks cool, as you can see in the photos. This rich patina will change over the years with use. The patina is the nature of 1095 carbon steel. Maintain the Hunter by keeping it clean and dry. It will prevent rust. Some folks like to rub their blade with a light coating of oil. If you're using your blade on food items, I recommend an edible oil. Any cooking oil will do. Keep your Hunter sharp by learning to strop your edge instead of grinding it on a stone. Your knives will love you for it and you will love your knives more. The Sheath The unfinished sheath is a simple fold over design in raw vegetable tanned leather. You can sand it, tool it, paint it, dye it, oil it, wax it, color it with Sharpies--or use it as-is. You can neck or belt carry your Hunter or stick in in your glove box, tackle box, bug-out bag or use it to make your next peanut butter and jelly sandwich. These make great kitchen knives.
