Description: Introducing the LP which is a snapshot of Brisbane Garage Bands from the period 1965 – 1967. Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia behind Sydney and Melbourne. None of these bands made it but their music is an important record of Brisbane’s youth culture from the mid sixties when English bands such as the stellar Beatles and the Rolling Stones ruled the world of pop. Other lesser known English bands such as the Pretty Things and the Yardbirds are also covered here by the Down and Out and the Southdown Moods respectively. A lot of these English super stars toured Australia in 1965 -1967 and indeed visited Brisbane creating a local British Invasion which fed the local music scene through its songs. Some other important local bands such as the Purple Hearts, Billy Thorpe and Chain and local guitar superstars such as Lobby Loyde went on to successful (inter) national careers and their music is properly represented in reissues. The bands on this LP were not that lucky, but that does not mean that they weren’t any good..............they were sensational. AM Radio Station 4BC was at the forefront of the movement through its support to a lot of these bands as was confectioner Hoadley which ran a Battle of the Sounds in each capital city which forum afforded these bands their 15 minutes of fame by allowing them to compete against other local bands at venues that they could only dream of playing at such as Brisbane Festival Hall which was on the corner of Albert and Charlotte Streets until relatively recently. R&B (which was defined totally differently in those days compared to the modern definition), ruled the local music scene and had its roots in American blues and soul music. The local bands covered these hits largely as a result of copying the English hit makers whose recordings were charting locally and was what the public wanted to hear and dance to. All of these bands and a lot of others played out short careers at local dances in suburban Brisbane. Enjoy the music with much better than expected sound quality.
