Description: For sale is a vintage 1879 copy of The Horn of Plenty of Home Poems and Pictures, by many authors, including Louisa May Alcott. The preface is by Sophie May, pen name of Rebecca Sophia Clark. The book is about 8.5" x 7" and has 191 pages. It was published by R Worthington, New York. The book is hardcover, with an embossed and gilded front cover and spine. The top of the page ends also seems to have been originally gilded, although now barely visible. The book is heavily illustrated, but does not have an acknowledged illustrator. Many of the drawings have and AH or HA signature, but several also seem to have a signature F Juengling SC, NY.The book is in very good condition, especially considering its age. There is no writing in it, except for some names. Miss Ella Bowen, Detroit Mich. 1881 wrote her name twice, once in pencil and once in ink. There is also a bookplate with the name of a more recent owner inside the front endpaper. A small, penciled bookstore note (1st. Ed, 4.00) appears just after the front endpaper, see images. The book has some shelf wear including lightly tanned pages and bumped corners and worn edges. The binding is tight and square, but there is a little external spine damage, see images. Finally, please make a note of the endpapers. They may look dark at first glance, but they actually have a delicate black design atop the dark brown background. I tried to photograph it accurately. Please feel free to ask any additional questions. Please look at my other auctions of books and music. All proceeds from this auction benefit the Northborough (MA) Town Library. These items were donated to the library and I volunteer all of my time to place them up on eBay. Local residents may avoid S&H fees by paying for and picking up books at the library. E-mail me for details. Thank you for supporting a community library.
