This is the famed “Second Edition” with text corrected by Tolkien's son Christopher. By way of introduction, it reprints a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien in 1951 which provides a brilliant background exposition. Nearly four years after Tolkien's death The Silmarillion was first published in 1977 to a chorus of acclaim: “A creation of singular beauty.... magnificent....” (The Washington Post); “Heart-lifting....a work of power, eloquence and noble vision.... Superb!” (The Wall Street Journal). The tales of The Silmarillion provided the underlying background for Tolkien's other sagas. He worked on this material for decades but never brought it to its final form. Long preceding The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it recounts the First Age of Tolkien's world, the ancient times familiar to his later characters (for reference, the activities in The Lord of the Rings take place in the Third Age of Middle-earth). Canonically, the texts of The Silmarillion were supposedly translated by Bilbo from Elvish during his stay in Rivendell. Included among these stories is the saga of Beren and Lúthien, a poignant drama which Tolkien wrote shortly after returning from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His son Christopher would later gather the various strands of this tale into a standalone book. Acclaimed illustrator Ted Nasmith, while still a teenager in 1972, sent J.R.R. Tolkien photos of his painting of “The Unexpected Party” featuring Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit. A few weeks later he received a letter from Tolkien praising his work and making suggestions. Nasmith recalls that it was invaluable encouragement for a budding teenage artist. Later, after creating numerous highly acclaimed depictions of Tolkien's work, Ted Nasmith was invited to illustrate this edition of The Silmarillion. Over 45 magnificent illustrations by this celebrated artist (many of which appear for the first time) now enhance this deluxe edition.
