Late 18th Century Caughley Porcelain "Salopian" Dessert Dish; Circa 1785

Description: Payment | Shipping | Policies Late 18th Century Caughley Porcelain "Salopian" Dessert Dish; Circa 1785 Caughley porcelain square dessert dish decorated with under glaze blue flowers with gilt accents and trim. The dishes typify the restrained elegance of the late 18th century Georgian period. It has an impressed SALOPIAN mark. Sticker on the underside with Bill Dickenson's Iron Bridge label. Porcelain was first made by Thomas Turner at Caughley in Shropshire in 1775. This dish would have been made c.1785-90 and possibly gilded by Chamberlain in Worcester rather than in house. It is unusual to find a piece of Caughley with an impressed mark. The SALOPIAN mark is considered uncommon by Godden in his book Caughley and Worcester. Excellent condition. No nicks, dings or fleabites. Very minor wear to the gilding, mainly on the rim, as pictured. In one area the gilding has flaked away from the rim rather than been worn away, exposing rough and specked areas of the rim caused by impurities in the firing, probably the cause of the gilding not adhering as well as usual. There is an odd run in the blue under glaze, that comes down from the rim border and into the white body. Obviously a manufacturing flaw. All the colors are bright with little to no wear. Measures 9.25" from corner to corner and 1.75" high at the rim. Shipping is FREE in the Continental USA. Please email for an international shipping quote. All items come from a smoke free home.
