Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued for the March For Freedom Now protests in Los Angeles and Chicago. This button was distributed to attendees of the march. Measures 2 1/2" inches. Rare. BACKGROUND: The March For Freedom Now protests were a set of two protests organized by the Martin Luther King and Southern Christian Leadership Conference and held outside the 1960 Republican and Democratic National Conventions. At the Democratic convention King met with John F. Kennedy and received a commitment pledge from the future president. Though Nixon refused to meet with King at the Republican convention, he declared that he would run on a pledge for 'the full use of power, resources and leadership of the Federal Government to eliminate discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin. Theses pledges were among King's earliest political victories and established him as the preeminent leader of the Black Civil Rights Movement.
