Description: Complete set of five 1970 MGM Studios Auction Catalogs, plus near complete set of the five catalog supplements (double gold supplement, missing the pink one, possibly two bidders mixed these up at the 1970 sale, also the goldenrod summary sheet, also a page of the bidder's notes, the circled items are presumably the ones that she won.) Palos Verdes (Los Angeles) estate sale find, good condition, some insect damage on the edges of the handwritten bidder's notes. These are original 1970s catalogs and not print on demand copies or later reproductions. The 1970 MGM auction was an historical liquidation of Golden Age Silver Screen artifacts. The backstory is that in 1969, mysterious millionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian purchased a controlling interest in the studio. The investor began to slice off and sell lucrative portions of the studio, including Los Angeles real estate, and for $1.5 million, MGM’s storied collection of props and costumes. The purchaser of the personal property was the David Weisz Company, which prepared to auction the items to the highest bidder. Many unique properties were included, such as ships and airplanes. Another hot category was the costumes. Costumer Kent Warner was assigned the monumental task of sorting and cataloging the collection. Weisz conducted the auction from May 3-20, 1970. It was immensely popular at the time, though the prices realized seem comically low to a contemporary reader. The top lot at the auction was a pair of Dorothy's ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz, which sold for $15,000. Though available for purchase by all 1970s bidders for $10, complete sets of all five catalogs are scarce today. This is your chance to purchase a piece of Hollywood history.
