Description: Size: 204 mm square (8 inches).Condition: Two small chips, one to top right corner and the other to bottom edge - please see photos. Otherwise very good. Old plate hanger residue on back. This tile is transfer printed in brown and the main image is of horses tethered beneath a sign saying "Horses taken in to Bait". This appears to refer to a practice of keeping horses for hire to users, although baiting also refers to taming a wild horse by tempting it with certain food. The design is from an etching and the initials of the artist, W P Simpson, are bottom left. The back of the tile has the embossed marks of Minton Hollins & Co, Patent Tile Works, Stoke on Trent, and the number 145 W. There is also a PODR diamond trade mark stamp. Unfortunately this is not very readable but it looks like the year code is an I, which would date the design to 1872.Minton Hollins and Co were the most famed and prolific tile manufacturers of the Victorian era - their tiles were used in many domestic and public buildings, including the Westminster Houses of Parliament, the US Capitol Building in Washington DC, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The company was founded by Herbert Minton who also ran the sister firm of Mintons. The tile is from a series, which we believe was a twelve tile series, depicting farm animals, mainly horses. Most of the tiles in the series were engraved by WP Simpson. The design is similar in style to the Farm Animals series produced by William Wise in c1875 for Mintons, but that series is very common, while this series seems to be rare. In addition this tile has the addition of an engraved border, making it an 8-inch tile, which is even more scarce.Literature: Hans van Lemmen, Minton Hollins Picture Tiles, Gladstone Pottery Museum, Second Edition, 1985.
