Description: Men started smoking pipes in the Erzgebirge Mountains in Germany when the fashion came over from England at the beginning of the 19th century. The way of smoking was soon seen in the manufacture of wooden figurines, too. The first smoking men were made in the village of Heidelberg near Seiffen around 1850. Despite the term smoking men, women and even inanimate objects are also seen. The smoking man is part of a comprehensive series of a wide variety of wooden smoking figurines made in the Müller family-run workshop in Seiffen/ Germany following the long tradition of Erzgebirge wooden folklore.
