Description: Musa balbisiana Atia Black is a tree in the Musaceae family. The common name for it is Black Thai. A native to eastern South Asia, northern Southeast Asia, and southern China. It can grow to 16 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The leaves are around 18" wide and 3-4 feet long. The stalk will become black with age, so be patient. :0) It prefers full sun and lots of water. It is a fast grower and added as a bonus; it is also cold hardy. A real gem to have in the yard. It can be put in a container and brought inside for the Winter. It can grow in most soils that are well-drained. The flowers come out from late Winter to early spring. The blooms are red, green, and off-white. Zones 7-11Germination Scarify a small hole in each seed with sandpaper or a nail file, then soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water before sowing 1 inch deep in good loamy compost. Keep in a propagator or warm place between 70 and 80 degrees F, and do not exclude light.
