Netherlands Poster Stamp - 1910 Nijmegen Electricity Expo

Description: [zipedit] NetherlandsEvent Publicity Poster Stamps In the city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands in 1908, the city council decided to hold a vote on the issue of building a municipal power plant. Since most people had no experience with electricity, it was decided to stage an exposition dedicated to electricity, and to showcase its uses for home, business and entertainment. That exposition was held from July 2 to August 15 of 1910, and was a tremendous success, with over 200,000 visitors. There were many exhibits for the practical uses of electricity, but the highlight of the exposition for most people was "Klein Zwitserland" (Little Switzerland) which was an area modeled after a Swiss Alpine village, and dedicated to fun and entertainment. Several poster stamps were issued as publicity for the exposition. This design may have been issued to give people the idea that it was a Swiss issue, since the name of the city and the text are in German, and it reads HELVETIA at the top. There is also a "denomination" of 2½ at each upper corner. The design center features a Swiss Alpine village in the mountains. This design exists with brown centers, and frames in blue, greem, red, violet, and grey-violet. This design is listed in Gardiner & Greiczek as Type 4, on page 457. It is also listed R. J. Vos' "Catalogue des Timbres Commémoratifs de la Hollande" as #85.3a - 85.3e. They are also listed in Pén's "Catalogue des Vignettes Suisses de Propagande et Commémoratives 1878-1980" as #s.158a - s.158e. The stamps are F/VF, OG, H.
