Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts three women visiting prisoners at the Tombs Prison in New York City. Presumably they are the wife, girlfriend or mother of the incarcerated. To the left of the picture is a short article entitled: "In the Tombs."Below the tombs picture is an image showing a rag-picker helping her two dogs pull a heavy cart. A short article about the picutre is above it. The Tombs was formally called the Halls of Justice and House of Detention, operational from 1838–1902. It was the first complex to have the nickname was an Egyptian Revival design by John Haviland completed in 1838. There was a rumor at the time that the building was inspired by a picture of an Egyptian tomb that appeared in John Lloyd Stephens' Incidents of Travel in Egypt, although this appears to be untrue. The building occupied a full block, surrounded by Centre Street, Franklin Street, Elm Street (today's Lafayette), and Leonard Street. It initially accommodated about 300 prisoners. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills about half of it, measuring approximately 6.5 x 8.75 inches, with a caption below it. PLEASE NOTE: The print has a one inch chip out of the upper margin that comes close to the folio on the top. It does not effect the picture area. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
