Description: Beautiful large-format 1825 antique map of the Western Hemisphere by Henry Tanner in original hand color, printed more than 193 years ago. This handsome map is titled America. It shows the Western Hemisphere from Cape Horn to Baffin Bay, and from the Sandwich Isles to the western fringes of Europe and Africa, including North America, Central America, the West Indies, and South America. In North America, the United States is shown with most of its northern border as it is today, except for northern Maine, which extends into present-day Canada, and the Pacific Northwest at which point it remains undrawn, showing neither United States nor British claims. Alaska is still largely unexplored while Mexico is in control of Texas and the Southwest. Topography is delineated with hachure llines, and there is excellent detail throughout, with hundreds of place names, including a large Missouri Territory, Aleutian Islands, Lake Superior, Hudson's Bay, Tierra del Fuego, Florida, Cuba, the Dangerous Archipelago in the South Pacific, and many more. The image area measures a generous 47 x 52.8 cm [18½" x 20¾"] on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. The map was published by Henry Schenck Tanner of Philadelphia in the 1825 edition of his New American Atlas — the most distinguished atlas published in America during the nineteenth century. This 1825 map of America reflects some of the recent discoveries in the Arctic. There is added detail west of the northern end of Baffin Bay, including Sabine Island, Jones Bay, Regent's Inlet, and Winter Harbour, none of which are shown on the previous edition of the map, published in 1823. Condition: This map is in very fine condition, bright and clean, printed on a heavy paper, with a center fold, as issued, some minor offsetting, a faint crease in the left corner, and no marks, rips, or tears.
