Photographs do not do this paper substrate justice as it practically "glows" on the wall. Our art prints are produced on acid-free papers using archival inks to guarantee that they last a lifetime without fading or loss of color. These prints include a 1" white border around the image to allow for future framing and matting, if desired. The Story Behind the Print: Gregory "Pappy" Boyington is the kind of individual that legends are made of. With a colorful beginning to his Marine Aviation career, Boyington began his first combat tour with the legendary "Flying Tigers" under the leadership of Gen. Claire Chennault. After a dishonorable discharge by Chennault, Boyington eventually took up command of a dispersed group of Corsair pilots within VMF-124, later redesignated as VMF-214 "Black Sheep Squadron". Pappy Boyington led VMF-214 to an exemplary victory record, where he alone would rack up 26 confirmed victories (28 by other sources) against the Empire of Japan. Pappy's luck eventually ran out when he was shot down and interned as a POW for the remainder of the war. A6M Zero pilot, Masajiro "Mike" Kawato would later claim credit for the victory over Pappy Boyington in his own autobiography, "Bye Bye Black Sheep". Artist Craig Tinder, had the distinct privilege of meeting both Pappy Boyington and Mike Kawato before they flew West which served as a strong inspiration for the artwork "Lucybelle".
