Description: The Patagonia 'MARS' project was created by Patagonia in 2004 to support Special Operations Forces & other US government personnel. The line once supplied the demand for field-tested military apparel, but has now seen a surge in interest due to its rarity. MARS is an abbreviation for 'Military Advanced Regulator System', and the project is split into 6 levels, according to the protection that each garment provides its wearer.⁣⁣Level 1 provides the wearer with a base layer that is designed for colder temperatures, and features items like t-shirts and boxers. Level 2 is also more base layers made from a heavier construction, and features long John bottoms, a balaclava, and a long sleeve. Level 3 is where the clothing starts to become “actual garments”, employing fabrics with high air permeability to allow its wearer to alter the airflow around their body. Level 4, or “Cross-layer 2” features light jackets constructed of different variations of polyester fabrics, that again allow the user to retain maximum amounts of airflow. Finally, levels 5 & 6 are the outer layers of the MARS system, with level 5 being the “Active” outer layer. The garments in these levels are able to trap heat whilst expelling moisture and are waterproof via the use of a DWR coating. ⁣⁣When combining all these levels, the wearer is granted protection from the harsh alpine elements, whilst still being granted airflow. The MARS system is excellent at not only trapping heat, but also shifting it around the body.”⁣⁣The Patagonia Level 5 Soft Shell Jacket is made in the USA and provides the wearer with an excellent protection against the elements, featuring an encapsulated microfibre 100% Nylon construction that is both breathable and water-repellent.⁣⁣
