Description: Nice copy of this rare and beautiful Alphabet book from 1908. Bound in pictorial beige boards stamped in black, red and green showing a duck, rooster, flamingo and parrot behind bars in "A Bird Cage". With delightful full-page alphabet rhymes by Wallace Irwin and illustrations by Edna Morse, printed in black, red, and white, covering a full alphabet of birds, from Auk to Zenaidura Macroura (scientific name of the mourning dove). Book is 11.25" x 8.5". The binding is solid, with a little shelf wear on the corners and the head and tail of the spine. Very slight grubbiness to the spine, the back cover, and the fore edge of the front. This unusual book is printed on heavy tan paper, on one side only. There are a few small bent corners, and a little smudging on a few pages (most noticeable is on the H page). The pages for C, H, J, R and T have small closed tears at the bottom (1/2"-1"), the I page has a 1/2 closed tear at the the top, and the L page has a longer closed tear coming up from the bottom, about 6" total, but all in the inside margin. The L page tear carries over to a 2" split from the bottom of the M and N pages, and the blanks following those. None of these minor defects affect any of the printed text, and all are shown in the photos. Despite these defects, this is still a stunning example of an early 20th century alphabet art book. Reasonable starting bid after taking into consideration the listed defects. See photos.
