Description: A large, antique basketry storage jar or olla from Maine, of a very rare form and size, made by a member of one of the Wabanaki tribes, probably Penobscot, probably early 20th century. It is constructed using braided and coiled sweet grass on a cedar warp. Its 12 3/4" tall by 11 1/2" diameter, 8 3/4" at the rim. It is in fine condition, with a very nice warm surface. As is usually the case with Eastern Woodland basketry, the dyes used were very much fugitive, and only remains where the surface wasn't exposed to light. There is no indication where else the dye might have been applied.
