SummaryExcerpt of the INTRODUCTION by Jose QuinteroAs I read the titles of the nine plays in this collection, I am amazed that such vast and complex worlds can be bound in a single volume. Each of O'Neill's plays, particularly those I have directed, has absorbed, shaped, and reshaped almost every day of my life since that fateful moment sometime in the spring of 1955 when my friend Leigh Connell handed me a copy of The Iceman Cometh. Let me introduce you to these plays in the same way I would introduce you to a group of old and beloved friends: Friends who will weather the test of time; friends who have been unyielding, demanding, exacting, and uncompromising to such a degree that there were times during the friendship when I, filled with sweaty panic, wanted to cry out, "Enough. I don't know enough. I can stretch no further." But these friends were conceived and matured with immense care and precision. They had to be. They were meant to carry a great force-the capacity to feel. We were rehearsing A Moon for the Misbegotten, which I had gone there to direct in the winter of 1974. We talked about the sea; how much it meant to both of us; how O'Neill had loved it; and how he could never live too far from his "old devil sea." As we walked on in the ebbing golden light, she asked me if I liked Anna Christie, saying she would like to play Anna. Our hands joined….
