John Hanning Speke (1827-1864) led an expedition with James Augustus Grant (1827-1892) to locate Lake Victoria and demonstrate that it was the true source of the Nile. His account was heavily edited and bowdlerized by John Hill Burton, and "ultimately did not sell as well as Blackwood hoped" (ODNB). But this copy was presented as a school prize in 1892, long after its original publication, when Britain was in the process of colonizing the length of the Nile.
