Description: The New Testament in the Original Greek Text revised by Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort Published by Macmillan and Co. 1890 ISBN: Condition: Acceptable Description: Hardcover, in two volumes. Crimson boards, half leather tan with gold gilt two line border.Raised bands on the spine, gilt Grecian urn motifs to decorate. Red edge text block on three sides. The text is the original text revised by Brooke Foss Westcott and Fenton John Anthony Hort, first published in 1881 and still seen as an exemplary piece of scholarship. This copy from 1890 has been privately rebound at some time in the early 1900s by Heyes Bookbinder, Ramsey, Isle of Man. In its present form, these volumes represent a unique scholar’s text. The rebinding has allowed for ample blank blue ruled sheets to be inserted allowing for translation and annotation to be recorded neatly on each page facing the text. The original owner’s handwriting, in black ink, is minute but very neat and legible. The endpapers of each volume give a name, Frank G. Green, of Trinity College, Cambridge and a date of 1907. Bookplates with an owl design decorate the paste downs. The interior text block is in good condition for a book over 125 years old. Light tanning but not spotted or stained. The crimson boards are slightly rubbed and have lost a little colour at the edges. The most visible wear and tear is on the leather trim which has worn away in places. The first volume is missing part of the title box on the spine and the spine has split at the back joint with the board revealing the printed paper used by the binder, including an advertisement for washing blue. This would make a wonderful gift for any serious scholar of biblical Greek, with plenty of space to be filled by the next owner. 595 text pages. Please email for more photographs or details.
