Description: TOPOKE / LOKELE SHORT SWORD - CONGO D.R.C Total length : 16,5" - 42 cm Periode : 19th or beg of the 20th cent. Knife - Lokele/Topoke Currency - D.R. of Congo Height : 43 cm Width : 9 cm Provenance : Karl Stålgärde (Sweden), Karlsson & Wickman Gallery (Sweden), Belgian collection (me) Materials : Wrought iron (very heavy), wood Periode : Late 19th century or beg. of the 20th century This knife, with its superb engravings, should be considered more as a currency than as a weapon. Indeed. In the 19th century, the large quantity of metal (iron) contained in the "pommel" of this knife was still used for trade between the ethnic groups of the former Eastern Province of the Belgian Upper Congo (ex). The large amount of iron contained in its pommel has led to many stupid things being said. Particularly about these famous knives that were thrown from the top of a tree to stun an enemy. Nothing could be further from the truth, of course. This one was collected between 1900 and 1910 by a Swede named Karl Stålgärde (7e late photographs), who joined the police force of the former Belgian Congo and took this superb souvenir with him to bequeath it to his family. The last photograph shows the "diploma" of his passage from Ecuador which was a "rite" of passage for people going to Africa for the first time. Sold with the certificate of authenticity from the Karlsson&Wickman gallery. Insured delivery (Bpost) This Topoke/Lokele knife will be shipped to you via BPOST (Belgian post) and you will receive a tracking number.
