Description: 45 Quality English Pre-decimal 1880s - 1960s Large Penny Up to the time of decimalisation in 1971 there was a marvelous assortment of coins circulating in the UK (and Ireland!) It was a duodecimal system, with 12 pennies to a shilling and and 20 shillings to a pound. These large bronze pennies weighed 9.4 grams or 1/3 oz and were the same size as the American half dollar. The Obverse shows the Monarch's head with Britannia on the reverse. Talk to anyone who grew up in Britain in the 1960s and the "old money" as it was called will feature strongly in their reminiscences. There were penny sweets, twopenny iced lollies, fourpenny choc ices, sixpenny bars of chocolate.... You could be offered a "penny for your thoughts", be "in for a penny in for a pound", have to go and "spend a penny", have something explained until the "penny drops", something could cost "a pretty penny", be accused of being a "penny pincher", or be "penny wise and pound foolish"! I have recently acquired a couple of sacks of old English pennies that were mainly collected in the mid 1960s - rather than 1971, when they were withdrawn upon decimalisation. This means that most of the pennies are from the 1940s or earlier and are in much better condition than usual (often Very Fine rather than Fine). This is an unusual opportunity to acquire a bag of 45 of these magnificent old English penny coins. There are 10 Victorian from the 1880s to 1901, 10 Edwardian from 1902 to 1910, 10 George V from 1911 to 1936 and 10 George VI from 1937 to 1952. Then only 5 from Elizabeth II 1953 to 1967. (Note unlike most mixed lots this one has only a few of the more common Elizabeth II coins). There are no damaged, stained or badly worn coins and the photograph is a fair representation of what the coins will look like.
