Thanks Obituary Robert Burgess 'Bob' Mason--Captain, United States Marine Corps (Retired), a Marine Corps aviation pioneer, an Antarctic explorer, a nationally known technical advisor for MGB enthusiasts, and a Master Mason, passed away on the eighth of February 2005. He lived in Fairhope, Alabama. Captain Mason was born on 11 September, 1931. He grew up and attended school in Aurora and Berwyn, Illinois. After graduation from high school he enlisted in the US Navy, and rose to the rank of Airman First Class as a Link Trainer instructor. Selected for flight training, he attended flight school as a Naval Aviation Cadet at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, receiving his Marine Corps commission as a second lieutenant and Naval Aviator wings in 1953. His assignments throughout his military career were many and varied, and included fighter pilot and forward air controller in the Korean conflict, and pilot and navigator with the Navy's air development squadron VX-6 on Antarctic service in the mid-1950s. He transitioned to rotary wing aircraft and flew many of the new and quasi-experimental helicopters in the Marine Corp. inventory, including being a plank-owner in the first HR2S heavy lift helicopter squadron. He is believed to have flown the first successful night medevac mission in a Marine Corps helicopter, saving the life of a Marine bitten by a habu snake in a remote area of Okinawa. Captain Mason added transport pilot qualifications to his aviator skills, and flew many air cargo, personnel, and ground support missions during his service in Vietnam in 1967-1968. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1969. Many of his friends knew him as Bob Mason, an enthusiast for British cars, MGBs in particular. He and his wife restored and showed many examples of this sports car through their lives, winning numerous shows. He was a charter member of the North American MGB Register and was the Register's technical advisor from its inception until his death. In this role he helped many MGB owners, teaching them about their cars, advising them on maintaining their cars, helping diagnose problems and finding needed parts, and writing technical and 'how-to' articles for various British car publications. Captain Mason is survived by his wife of 39 years, Colonel Susan Dale Mason Mason, Ph.D., United States Marine Corps (Retired). He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Glenn and Dorothy Burgess Mason of Jackson, Mississippi. Captain Mason was adamant that there be no funeral or formal visitation for him. He preferred instead that he be remembered in life either at the control of an aircraft or helicopter, or with his jaunty hat and easy smile, driving one of his beloved MGs, and those wishes will be honored. The full military honors of a combat veteran will be rendered at a later date. The family will welcome friends informally in the home. He was a donor to Alabama Medical Gift Program. Arrangements are by HILTON-SHARPE MORTUARY TRANSPORT.
