Vintage handmade Bogolan strip-woven mud cloth from Mali, West Africa B230

Description: Mid century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent throw or shawl. Old mud cloth textiles are extremely rare and almost impossible to find; virtually all pieces currently on the market are new.The textile is handwoven in 5 1/4" (13.5cm) wide strips which are hand sewn together to form one large cloth and design is quite minimalist and modern. It is in elegant shades of khaki and natural tan colored cotton. The textile is 36" (92cm) wide x 63" (160cm) long with a hand sewn hem at one end and a small fringe. There are no holes or stains that I can see, aside from one 2" faded patch at one edge (see photos). The textile has been woven from raw, unprocessed cotton with a very crisp hand feel and is in excellent condition given its age and origins.I recommend hand washing separately with cold water and mild soap.
