Description: Vintage Papua New Guinea Yam Headress MASK Handmade Woven Fiber Tribal Art Vintage Papua New Guinea Yam Headress MASK Handmade Woven Fiber Tribal Art Click images to enlarge Description Vintage Papua New Guinea Yam Headdress MASK Handmade Abelam Tribal Art Woven Fiber This is an amazing find from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, a woven yam fiber mask! More amazing since I got it from an estate auction in the central valley of California with no provenance attached. Beautifully woven with an elongated head, definitive eyes and ears, and a tall open work headdress, make this mask super impressive. Traditionally, heavy painting with earth pigments would be applied to these masks. In this area of New Guinea, yams are the main agricultural product and a major food source for the Abelam people who make up the community. That being the case, many rituals and ceremonies are associated around planting, cultivating and harvesting yams. Such headdress masks are a major part of this 'yam' culture and used in the ceremonial display of large yams grown for exchange and social status. Measurements are 28" tall x 16" wide x 6-1/4" deep and weighs just about 9-1/2 ounces. Condition is very good as the mask has never been worn but hanging as wall decor. Please check the photos closely to judge the condition for yourself. This distinctive New Guinean mask would be a wonderful as wall art or as an addition to a collection. Thanks for looking.
