Bulbs are an average of 3 inches in diameter and plants are averaging 12 inches from the bottom of the root zone to the crown, so they will get off to a quick start. Beaucarnea recurvata is a tropical plant species that is commonly called a Ponytail Palm, and is one of the more unusual plants on the landscape scene. These unique plants are not true palms but are more closely related to agave and asparagus. Form unites this family as they all produce leaves in a tight rosette pattern. Ponytail Palms have earned their apt name with their strange form. Large, bulbous trunks near the ground gradually narrow into a dense spray of curly, ribbon-like leaves. Ponytail Palm is native to southeastern Mexico and will thrive in conditions similar to its native habitat. This makes it the perfect low-maintenance choice for Southern gardeners who want an unusual feature, focal point, or accent plant with minimal care requirements. Ponytail Palms often reach 30 ft. tall in their native environment, but they grow very slowly and rarely grow taller than 8 to 10 feet as a cultivated ornamental.
